ResumoSubtropical cyclones (SCs) are non-frontal low pressure systems with mixed characteristics of tropical and extratropical cyclones. In the South Atlantic, the highest frequency of SC occurs near the coast of the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, which comprises the Santos Basin (SB), an important oil region, responsible for the generation and flow of Brazilian oil and natural gas. The SCs that occur in the SB are responsible for storms with heavy rain, intense winds and waves, which can cause negative impacts for the navigation and operation of offshore platforms. The objective of this work is to evaluate the performance of the Eta regional model with 8 km of horizontal resolution (Eta-8km) in the representation of the SCs on the SB. With this aim a simulation of the CS Bapo (05-08/02/201) with the Eta-8km nested in European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5 (ERA5) was prepared. The case evaluations were made by comparing the simulation with data from Boia de Santos, from the National Buoys Program, and wind data estimated by the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT). The results indicate that the Eta-8km was able to simulate the occurrence and intensification of the CS, in addition to the atmospheric conditions related to the system.
